What Is a Scaffold Coupler?

A scaffold coupler is a forged steel or aluminium fitting that connects two scaffold tubes at a fixed or adjustable angle. Couplers are the core connection component in tube-and-coupler scaffolding systems, used wherever tubes must be joined without welding. The fitting grips around the outside of the tube and locks in place with a tightened nut and bolt.

Tube-and-coupler scaffolding is the most adaptable system available. It handles irregular building shapes, uneven ground, and non-standard spans that proprietary frame systems cannot accommodate. The coupler is what makes that flexibility possible.

Scaffold couplers are specified by type. Each type performs a different function, and substituting one for another on site creates a structural risk. Getting the right coupler for the right joint is not a minor detail; it determines how the load transfers through the scaffold.

Types of Scaffold Couplers at Scaffolds Online

Scaffolds Online stocks four coupler types, covering every standard connection requirement in tube-and-coupler scaffold construction:

TypeFunctionTube AngleCommon Use
Swivel CouplerConnects two tubes at any angleVariable (0-360 deg)Diagonal bracing, rakers, irregular structures
Double CouplerConnects two tubes at exactly 90 degFixed right angleLedger-to-standard, primary load-bearing joints
Sleeve CouplerJoins two tubes end-to-end in a straight line0 deg (inline)Extending tube length along a single run
Aluminium Swivel CouplerSwivel coupler in aluminium alloyVariable (0-360 deg)Weight-sensitive applications, aluminium tube systems

Swivel Coupler

The swivel coupler connects two scaffold tubes at any angle between 0 and 360 degrees. The pivot mechanism allows the coupler to rotate freely before it is locked in position with the bolt. This makes it the right fitting for diagonal bracing runs, raking tubes, and any connection where the intersection is not a clean 90 degrees.

Swivel couplers are non-load-bearing as primary connections. They are used for bracing and secondary members where the load path passes through the structure rather than directly through the joint.

  • Compatible with 48.3 mm OD scaffold tube
  • Steel forged body for strength under dynamic load
  • Used for diagonal bracing, cross-members, and angled frames

Double Coupler

The double coupler is a right-angle coupler that connects two scaffold tubes at exactly 90 degrees. It is the primary load-bearing coupler in tube-and-coupler scaffolding. Ledgers connect to standards through double couplers; transoms connect to ledgers through double couplers. Every horizontal-to-vertical load transfer in a tube-and-coupler system goes through this fitting.

EN74 requires double couplers to withstand a minimum slip load of 6.1 kN. That rating is what allows the fitting to carry working loads without the tube slipping through the coupler under load.

  • Rated to EN74 slip-load requirements
  • Fixed 90-degree connection, no rotation after locking
  • Required for all primary load-bearing joints in tube-and-coupler scaffolding

Sleeve Coupler

The sleeve coupler joins two scaffold tubes end-to-end in a straight line. It slides over both tube ends and clamps them together, creating an inline extension. Sleeve couplers are used when a tube run needs to extend beyond the length of a single tube.

They are also called joint pins or spigots depending on the application. The inline connection carries tension and compression along the tube axis but is not designed for bending loads.

  • Inline connection for extending tube runs
  • Steel construction, tightens over both tube ends
  • Not suitable as a lateral connection or primary support fitting

Aluminium Swivel Coupler

The aluminium swivel coupler performs the same function as the steel swivel coupler but uses an aluminium alloy body. The reduction in weight is noticeable when couplers are handled in volume on site, particularly on aluminium tube-and-coupler systems where the full scaffold assembly is weight-critical.

Aluminium swivel couplers are the best-selling coupler in our range for scaffolding teams working with aluminium tube systems for temporary structures, exhibition builds, and events scaffolding.

  • Aluminium alloy body, lighter than steel equivalent
  • Swivel function, compatible with 48.3 mm OD tube
  • Best for aluminium scaffold systems and weight-sensitive applications

Coupler Selection Guide

Getting the right coupler type right the first time avoids rework and prevents structural non-compliance. Use this as a reference:

Connection RequirementCorrect Coupler
Right-angle joint carrying vertical or horizontal loadDouble Coupler
Diagonal brace or angled connectionSwivel Coupler
Extending a tube run in a straight lineSleeve Coupler
Swivel connection in an aluminium tube systemAluminium Swivel Coupler
Any non-perpendicular structural connectionSwivel Coupler (not Double)

Never use a swivel coupler as a substitute for a double coupler at a primary load-bearing joint. The swivel mechanism does not lock with the same rigidity as a right-angle coupler and will not meet the EN74 slip-load threshold for load-bearing connections.

EN74: The Standard That Governs Scaffold Coupler Specification

EN74 (BS EN74-1) is the European standard that sets minimum mechanical performance requirements for scaffold tube couplers. It defines the tests a coupler must pass to be used in a structural scaffolding application.

The three tests that matter most for site use:

  1. 1Slip load test: the coupler must hold the tube without slipping until a specified load is reached. Double couplers must pass at 6.1 kN minimum.
  2. 2Torque test: the nut-and-bolt assembly must achieve the required clamping force at a defined torque, typically 50 Nm for most scaffold couplers.
  3. 3Fatigue test: the coupler must withstand repeated loading cycles without failure, reflecting real-world use where scaffolds are loaded and unloaded over a project.

UAE main contractors and scaffolding companies reference EN74 in their material specifications. When a scaffold is inspected or signed off under Dubai Municipality or OSHAD requirements, the coupler specification is part of the compliance record.

Scaffolds Online provides EN74 compliance documentation with trade and bulk orders on request.

Who Uses Scaffold Couplers in Dubai

Scaffold couplers are purchased by anyone building or maintaining a tube-and-coupler scaffold system. In the UAE, the main buyer groups are:

  • Scaffolding contractors providing temporary access structures on construction projects
  • Main contractors building complex or irregular structures where frame scaffolding is impractical
  • Scaffold hire companies maintaining stock for multiple site deployments
  • Industrial plant operators in Jebel Ali, Ruwais, and Sharjah who use tube-and-coupler for equipment access and maintenance scaffolding
  • Events and exhibition companies building temporary aluminium structures in Dubai and Abu Dhabi
  • Fit-out and MEP subcontractors requiring bespoke access configurations on active sites

Frequently Asked Questions

A double coupler connects two scaffold tubes at a fixed 90-degree angle and is rated for primary load-bearing joints. A swivel coupler connects tubes at any angle between 0 and 360 degrees and is used for diagonal bracing and angled connections. The key difference is structural: double couplers meet EN74 slip-load requirements for load-bearing use; swivel couplers do not. Using a swivel coupler at a right-angle load-bearing joint is a structural error. Each coupler type has a defined function and they are not interchangeable.
